Though a new snazzy tie, bottle of of Dad’s favorite cologne, or another subscription to Sports Illustrated are excellent sentiments for Father’s Day, gifting Dad with a meaningful Father’s Day memory will make his honorary day even more special. Here are five memorable ways to spend Father’s Day this year.

5 Special things to do on Father’s Day

1. Take a hike

If your dad prefers mountains to couches, find a local trail and go for a family hike. Trek up his favorite trail or surprise him with a trail he’s always wanted to scale. Visit Trails.com or AmericanTrails.org to find a hike near you.

2. Spend the day on the water

Instead of sitting around the living room reminiscing, make new memories on the water. Spend the morning surfing (if Dad is a former surfer dude), enjoyably float the day away on the lake fishing, or pack a picnic for a midday meal at the park pond.

3. Do what Dad says

Were you the kid who never listened to your pops when he asked you to help out around the yard? Now’s the time you can make up for it by spending the day doing what Dad wants you to do. Ask him for a to-do list (you may be wise to limit it to four or five things) and graciously do what he requests.

4. Make Dad a scrapbook

Though time-consuming, let Father’s Day be your inspiration to organize that photo box and make a scrapbook that highlights the special times you’ve spent with your Dad from childhood until now. If scrapbooking isn’t your thing, simply make a photo album. Make time on Father’s Day to go through those photos to tell Dad not just that he’s special, but also why is he special.

5. Give him an invitation

In addition to spending the day with your dad, give him an invitation for meaningful together time outside of Father’s Day. Invite to dinner, ask him to go golfing or fishing (or whatever activity he really enjoys), or make a weekly date to go on a walk, go to the movies, or watch sports. Knowing that you want to spend time with him when it isn’t a holiday is the gift he wants most.
